Overview

Quincy D. Newell is a scholar of American religious history who joined the Hamilton College faculty in 2015. She holds a B.A. from Amherst College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was hired as Associate Professor of Religious Studies in 2015 and was subsequently promoted to full Professor, appearing as “Professor of Religious Studies” in the 2021–22 catalog. She served as chair of the Religious Studies department by at least 2020–21.

Newell’s scholarly focus is the history of religion in the United States, with particular attention to the American West and to Mormonism. Her courses at Hamilton include “Religion in the American West” (History/American Studies/Religious Studies 241), “Religion in America” (a cross-listed course on identity, politics, and economics), and a seminar on Mormonism in America and the World (History/Religious Studies 338). She also co-taught a course on American scriptures with literature faculty member Benj Widiss. She was on leave in 2017–18 and again in 2023–24.

Relevance to Research

Newell represents Hamilton’s investment in American religious history as a field, and in particular in underrepresented traditions including Mormonism. Her decade-long tenure, promotion to full professor, and service as department chair indicate a significant ongoing institutional presence. The catalog record traces her course offerings in detail from 2015 through 2024.
