Hamilton SAVES
Hamilton SAVES (Sexual Assault Violence Education and Support) was a student-run organization at Hamilton College that educated the campus community about sexual assault policy, trained peer advocates, and provided support resources for survivors. By 2013, SAVES had transitioned from a staff-and-student joint venture to a fully student-run group. SAVES worked in coordination with Meredith Harper Bonham, Hamilton’s Title IX coordinator, to ensure students were informed about the college’s sexual misconduct policy.
Key Activities
-
Peer Advocate Program: SAVES trained peer advocates in sensitivity and best practices for supporting survivors, with over 30 students trained by spring 2013. Co-chairs included Samantha Sokoloff ‘13 and JJ Liebow ‘13. Training aimed for enough trained advocates that any survivor would know someone personally who could help them navigate reporting or access resources. (Spectator, April 18, 2013)
-
Sexual Assault Awareness Week: SAVES sponsored annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week events to raise campus awareness. (Spectator, April 18, 2013)
-
Sexual misconduct policy posters: The group produced and distributed posters about Hamilton’s sexual misconduct policy for placement in campus bathrooms.
-
Consent Fest: SAVES members attended a conference called “Consent Fest” at Williams College. (Spectator, April 18, 2013)
-
The group was still active by fall 2013, with a student listing SAVES Peer Advocate among their campus activities. (Spectator, November 14, 2013)
