ARA-Slater Food Services
The contracted food service company that operated Hamilton’s dining halls from at least the early 1980s until fall 1986, when it was replaced by Hallmark Foods. ARA-Slater (sometimes referred to simply as “ARA”) ran Commons (Soper Hall of Commons), McEwen Dining Hall, and the Hub snack bar. Tom Brann served as ARA’s director of food service at Hamilton in the early 1980s. ARA operated with a student food committee that provided input on menus, but was frequently criticized for repetitive menus, inconsistent food quality between the two main dining halls, and slow food-line refilling. The Hub’s afternoon hours (3–9 pm) were cut in 1982 due to low utilization. ARA offered special holiday dinners and made incremental menu changes (new cereals, new items like stromboli and taco puffs) in response to student complaints. The replacement by Hallmark Foods in 1986 was greeted with cautious optimism.
